Morocco المملكة المغربية Information about Morocco Morocco المملكة المغربية Al-Mamlaka al-Magribiya The Kingdom of Morocco  Morocco is a country located in North Africa, with coastlines on the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It is separated from Europe by the Strait of Gibraltar. Its neighboring countries are: Algeria to the east (the border with Algeria has been closed since 1994), Mauritania to the south (including Western Sahara, a territory occupied militarily by Morocco), and Spain to the north, with which it maintains strong commercial ties and shares both maritime and land borders (the Spanish autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla). There are also other Spanish enclaves on the Mediterranean coast (Penon de Alhucemas, Penon de Vélez de la Gomera, and the Chafarinas Islands). It is the only African country that is not currently a member of the African Union (AU), as in 1984 the assembly of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the predecessor of the AU, accepted the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), which has been under Moroccan military occupation since 1975, as a member, with only Morocco and its ally Zaire voting against it. Since then, Morocco has shown no interest in joining. However, it is a member of the Arab League, the Arab Maghreb Union, the Francophonie, the Organization of the Islamic Conference, the Union for the Mediterranean, the Group of 77, and the North-South Center. It is also an important non-NATO ally of the United States. Culture Morocco is an ethnically diverse country with a rich culture and civilization. Throughout its history, Morocco has welcomed many people from the East (Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Jews, and Arabs), the South (Sub-Saharans), and the North (Romans, Vandals, and Andalusians, including Moors and Jews). All civilizations have had an impact on Morocco’s social structure. Various forms of belief have developed, from paganism, Judaism, and Christianity to Islam. Each region has its own specific characteristics, which contribute to the national culture and the legacy of civilization. Morocco has made the protection of the diversity of its heritage and the preservation of its cultural heritage one of its priorities. Culturally speaking, Morocco has always succeeded in combining its Berber, Jewish, and Arab cultural heritage with external influences, such as French and Spanish and, in recent decades, Anglo-American.
