10-Day Morocco Itinerary from Tangier, What to visit in Morocco. And the Merzouga desert and camel rides, the Dades Valley and Ouarzazate and Marrakech.
Arrival at the port/airport of Tangier and pick-up by our staff. Departure to Chefchaouen and, weather permitting, stop in the Spanish city of Tetouan. Arrival in Chefchaouen, transfer to your hotel and free time to explore its streets, its old blue and white houses, and its panoramic views. Bed and breakfast in a charming riad.
We depart for Fez, where we will skirt the Rif forest until we reach the Roman ruins of the city of Volubilis. We will visit the ruins with an optional local guide and then continue on to Meknes, a city that reached its peak thanks to Sultan Mulay Ismail. Visit his mausoleum and the famous Bab Mansour gate. After the visit, we will head to our destination, Fez. Arrival in Fez and free time. Overnight stay in a charming riad.
After breakfast, guided tour of the city. A whole day devoted to discovering the intellectual city of the kingdom. There are numerous monuments to visit: Medersas (Koranic schools), Chahrij, Bouinania Attarin, Souks, Fes El-Jedid, the Karaouine Mosque (the world’s first university). Free time and overnight stay in a charming riad.
From Fez, we will head towards the Middle Atlas Mountains, stopping in Ifrane, known as the Switzerland of Africa. The next town will be Azrou, passing through the national park known for its cedar trees, home to the famous monkeys of the area. Next, we will travel through the Ziz Valley, which will take us to Erfoud, known for its fossils.
Arrival in the desert where we swap our 4x4s for dromedaries, which will take us on a pleasant two-hour ride through the dunes to the haima camp in the heart of the desert, where we will be welcomed, according to Saharan tradition, with Berber tea. Night in haimas under the desert stars.
We will watch the sunrise over a sea of dunes. After breakfast, we will return to Merzouga by camel and, after a shower, we will visit Khamlia, the so-called “black” village, named because its inhabitants are descendants of the ancient slave trade that came from Sudan. They are excellent musicians and have made this art their way of life.
With them, we will enjoy a short concert of Gnawa music. We will return to the 4×4 to travel along one of the tracks used in the Paris-Dakar Rally, visiting the mines of Khol and the remains of a French and Berber settlement. We will make a panoramic stop to contemplate the sandy desert that comprises Erg Chebbi as a whole.
Then we will visit some desert nomads who are in the process of settling down, with whom we can drink tea and learn more about their way of life. Return to the hotel. Free afternoon and night in the desert hotel.
After breakfast, we will return by camel to the hotel where we will shower and then begin our fourth day of travel in Morocco. We will head to Rissani, known for one of the most authentic markets in southern Morocco and rarely visited by tourists, where we can find a parking lot for donkeys and nomads who come to stock up on supplies. After this visit, we will head to the Todra Gorges, famous for their towering walls, which attract climbers from all over the world. We will visit the gorges and continue our tour to the Dades Valley, then on to the Valley of Roses and the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs. We will discover the kasbahs located in the middle of this valley and then head to Ouarzazate, also known as the Hollywood of Morocco. Transfer to the hotel and overnight stay in a charming riad.
After breakfast, we will visit the Taourirt Kasbah and then, after traveling 25 km by road, we will visit the Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and famous for being the setting for blockbuster films such as the Oscar-winning “Lawrence of Arabia,” “The Sheltering Sky,” and “Babel.” We will follow the road that crosses the Tichka Pass and takes us back to the “Red City”: Marrakech. Upon arrival, we will be dropped off at the hotel. Free afternoon and night in a charming riad.
After breakfast, we will take a guided tour of the city. There are numerous monuments to visit: Ben Youssef Madrasa, Bahia Palace, Jemaa el-Fna Square, Saadian Tombs, souks, and the Koutoubia Mosque. Free afternoon and evening in a charming riad.
After breakfast, our private transport will pick us up at the agreed location and we will begin our Day 9 10-Day Morocco Itinerary from Tangier to the Atlantic coast, heading for Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador. Along the way, we will pass through vast argan forests, where the precious argan oil is extracted, and we will be able to see how it is made in one of the cooperatives that exist there. This town was an ancient Portuguese citadel, and behind its walls lie numerous picturesque corners steeped in history, which you can begin to discover for yourselves as soon as you arrive.
Free day in Essaouira. You can choose from a wide and varied range of activities on offer on the city’s beaches. You can explore the beach on horseback, by dromedary, on a quad bike, or, if you enjoy walking, take a long stroll along the Atlantic coast. Reach the coastal dunes or sunbathe. There is also a wide range of water sports on offer, such as kite surfing, windsurfing, surfing, jet skiing, etc.
If you choose to explore the streets of the medina, you will find numerous shops, artisans, and artists offering their wares at reasonable prices. Also famous for its fishing port, you can sample the excellent fish and seafood caught off its coast. Free afternoon and evening in a riad.
